Kindergarten

Week 4: J. Rogét Spumante
Five years ago our daughter was christened at St. Theresa's, today she started kindergarten there. When she came up for the christening, my grandmother brought a bottle of wine with her, but we did not have a chance to drink it that day. My grandmother passed away a short time later, and we found ourselves holding on to the bottle for some reason. Today seemed like an appropriate time to drink it. She would have be so proud of our daughter.day
Mel: it is delicious, I could drink the whole bottle. I love it! I love bubbly wines like that so... Rating: 5 out of 5 grapes.

Jay: Spumantes all taste the same to me, and this one is extra sweet. The bubbles are fun though. Rating: 3 grapes out of 5

Viognier?

Week 3: Angove Family Winemakers Nine Vines Viognier.

Neither of us have ever even heard of this grape before, but it had a nice Wine Spectator rating (89) and a great price ($8).

Mel: It's good, it's dry. Really easy to drink, tastes like water. It hits you fast; I'm sweating, and I keep talking, just like I did in college. Rating: 4 grapes out of 5.

Jay: Light and crisp, but really holding up well with our meal (pasta with garlic sauce and veggies). Negative = screw of top... meh, a non-issue for sure, but it takes some of the fun out of drinking a bottle of wine. I'd have no problem drinking this one again, especially for that price. Rating: 4 grapes out of 5.

Cellar of the Devil

Week 2: Concha Y Toro's Casillero del Diablo

Another one from the existing stash. The bottle recommended serving between 59° & 64° so I put it in the fridge for an hour or two.

Jay says: I like it, and would absolutely drink it again. Rating: 4 grapes out of 5. A lot more flavor coming out as it warms up... guess I chilled it to much.

Mel says: After a while it is more "alcoholly" than flavor. Dry and not fruity. Rating: 2 grapes out of 5. I like it better after adding an ice cube, it goes down easier when colder.

And we're off!

Week 1: Beringer Sparkling White Zinfandel

We just pulled something out of the basement for week #1.

Jay says: Yuck. There's a reason that this one was in the basement, and its not because that is where the spare fridge is. Pink dry and not all that sweet. Not terrible, but not good. Rating: 2 grapes out of 5

Mel says: Rating: 4 grapes out of 5! I want to go to the store and buy two more bottles for just myself!
